The largest components of acids in indonesian rosin is levopimaric, palustric, isoimaric and abietic acids. The most characteristic form of Indonesian rosin, differing from pine, is levopimaric and mercusicc acid. The Diels Alder reaction is the adition of dienophile to conjugate diene such as found in the abietic type acids. of four abietadienoic acids, only levopimaric acid reacted with maleic anhydride (MA). This reachtion is commonly known as maleation and its product is maleopimaric acid. It is a good papersizing agent. In this ecperiment, papersizing agent was made from Sindang Wangi rosin WW and WG quality. Optimal condition of WW rosin reacting to maleic anhydride was equivalent to 1: 3 at 180 Celcius Degree and 1 : 1 at 230 Celcius Degree. The papersizing agent was analyzed using gas chromatography. Quantitative analysis used the internal normalize method which results were 31.9% for WW and 18.4% for WG rosin. Papersizing agent parameters measured in the experiment were softening point, indicated that papersizing agent made from WW and WG rosin was a good quality.
