The 1990s was a decade of enourmous change. The cold war ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The place of globalization accelerated as the revolution in communication technologies reduced barriers to international trade and investment. The number of democratic countries expanded dramatically in the former Soviet Union, Africa and other parts of the developing world. These changes have left the United States as the only legitimate super power and acknowledge leader of the world. It also raised new challenges and opportunities for the United States leadership in the world. Although it is the only super power, world peace is far from reality. The United States is still in dispute with countries such as Iraq, Russia and mainland China. Regeneration and leadership may have occurred but this does not guarantee a more peaceful world.
