Almost all English books available for the teaching of English as a foreign language to beginners in indonesia present new materials in a context followed by singled-out sentences with illustrating pictures to hint at the meaning of the sentences. As an English context poses a host of pronounciation problems, vocabulary problems, and grammar problems to beginning learners, comprehending if such materials may be quite hard. hence, on the basis of the theory of human information processing, an alternative approach may be proposed. The assumption is that the presentation of contextualized English materials must be preceded by a list of words used in the context and the translation of the words in Indonesian and an explanation of the grammatical rules which are found in the context. This research aims to find out if English materials which are written on the basis of Indonesian knowledge structures are easier to process and comprehend than those that are not written on the basis of indonesian knowledge structures. It uses the survey method that involves 468 four - graders of four Catholic Elementary Schools in Surabaya as the subjects. The instrument consists of two sets of English materials, one is written in the basis of Indonesian knowledge structures and the other one is not written on the basis of Indonesian knowledge structures and a questionnaire.
