A sustainable energy supply is an essential ingredient to ensure national sustainable development, which in turn, provides an important step towards national development objectives that is to achieve equally distributed prosperity and justice for the public. The energy sector in Indonesia has long been seen as the most important energy alternative after fossil fuel for, electrical generation. However, despite its abundant potential, the development of renewable energy only contributes 20% to the national electrical generation installed capacity. On the contrary, the utilizatiob of non renewable energy sources such as fossil fuel will soon encounter serious problems of reserve depletion and significant environmental impacts. This article describes the current national energy situation and its future outlook. It also takes into account the existing issues nationally or globally related to the energy sector, national energy resources both fossil and renewable, as well as its future strategic development prospects.
