The study objective was to determine factors influencing lecturer functional rank. The theoritical framework was based on Blau's individual choices and preference theory. He hypothesized that individual choices and preferences were constrained by the social structre could influence individual behavior on their choices and preferences. This study focused on social structure as it relates to surrounding environment of Kopertis III lecturers in particular campus and professional groups. The hypothesis to be verified relates to lecturer carier (functional rank) development and its correlation to campus conditions, participation in proffesional groups, and the individual lecturer themselves. Polling was done to a sample of 100 Kopertis III lecturers. Lecturers characteristics were held this job between 10 - 19 years, academic rank ranging from Junior Assistant / III A to lecturer / III D, the majority being Junior Lecturer / III C. The significant factors influencing career development of Kopertis III lecturers were age, post graduate degree, academic rank, involvement in professional group. Willingness to collect individual credit points. Scientific article productivity was also posititvely correlated to the existence of campus scientific journals.
