In order to understand womens economic potential, this study was conducted to scrutinize tender issues in four short stoies and ten poems written between 1991 - 2000 by ten women writers of West Java. Structural approach and womens point of view were utilized toanalyze the work. It was founf that all short stories and most of the poems ironically believed in the traditional gender position, where men held the power and dominated over the submissive, domesticated, weak and stupid women. This study concluded that as long as women live and accept the traditional gender role, they were opted t be economically dependent. Until changes occur, they will only be given housework, clerical work, unpaid and low paid jobs, which in reality means dependency.
