Isi artikelDiana Archangeli states that "Optimality Theory the Linguistic Theory of the 1990s." This theory was introduced by Alan Prince and Paul Smolensky in University of Arizona Phonology Conference, in 1993. The purpose of this article is to introduce Optimality Theory (OT) to encourage my fellow Indonesian linguists to study OT and explore Indonesian languages from the perspectives of OT. To get concrete illustrations of the basic concepts in OT, examples are mostly in Javanese. OT accepts the notion of universal principles that make language acquisition possible. However, OT rejects the assumptions of theories that are based on Principles and Parameter (PP) such as Minimalist Program (MP), that these principles are inviolable. OT proposes that universal grammar is a set of violable constraints, and specific languages differ from each other due to the ranking of these (violable) constraints. The publication of Optimality Theory: Phonology, Syntax, and Acquisition by Dekkers, van der Leeuw, and van de Weijer (eds.), 2000, gives an indication of the wide spread acceptance of OT in all areas of linguistic research.
