Minangkabaunese is commonly known for its ragam adat, a specific cultural-traditional style of the language that has been regarded as having a high value. However, over the last two decades, the ragam adat tends to 'dry up'. One reason for this situation is the hegemony of the national language, bahasa Indonesia. This paper presents a set of data and facts showing that the ragam adat tends to become 'dry'. The information and discussion of the paper will give contribution both theoreticalIy and factualIy to the condition of the local languages in Indonesia. It is also discussed how the policy of the national language should be in order that the local languages in Indonesia could live side by side with the national language.
