Isi artikelThis paper, which is a diachronic study of Kisar, is neo-scientific in nature. As stated by Kartodirjo (1984: 2-4), some historical issues of language may emerge from this type of study and thus deserve to be analyzed. According to him, we need to improve the methods used in such studies by absorbing concepts and theories from other disciplines. Implicitly, linguistics is one discipline that is recommended. Neo-scientific historical descriptions tend to express l'histoire des peuples sans histoire. The diachronic dimensions of Kisar that are analyzed in this paper tend to make use of diachronic linguistic concepts and theories. From the diachronic dimension, Kisar deserves to be studied because it shows unique vernacular characteristics among related languages in South West Maluku. Those languages belong to Central Austronesian languages located in Eastern Indonesian archipelago. As a method, this kind of study is able to process linguistic data from particular primary and secondary sources, to explain various problems that are not analyzed by synchronic linguistic studies, and to describe the development and tendencies of language change in the diachronic dimension, which typically emphasize the variety of problems found in the vernacular languages spread out in areas in Eastern Indonesia.
