This study focuses on the use of Balinese vocabulary in articles from the Bali Post, a regional Indonesian language newspaper published in Denpasar. In the data, October 1998, 308 Balinese words were used, most of which (94,5%) are from the domains of the Hindu religion and Balinese customs. It seems that in expressing their religious and cultural ideas, Balinese native speakers are constrained by the difficulty of finding suitable Indonesian words. The use of Balinese words are felt to be the best solution, although there is always a risk that they might not be understood by non-Balinese readers.
