Intonation has always been associated with the semantic and syntactic features of sentences. Although there are scholars who have touched upon aspects of sentential intonation such as the relation between intonation and emotional functions (Pane 1950; Alisjahbana 1953; Halim 1974) and speakers' attitude (Halim 1974; Wojowasito 1978), none has attempted to look at intonation from a pragmatic perspective, in particular how sentences may generate propositions to convey pragmatic information. This paper is a preliminary study which attempts to describe this pragmatic phenomenon of sentential intonation while at the same time showing that certain propositions may be generated by the pragmatic structure within the sentential intonation. It also touches on the theoretical implications of the pragmatic function of sentential intonation in the teaching and learning of Bahasa Indonesia.
