Dissatisfaction with tests which a team of British specialists had conducted for the Ethiopian Department of Education for High School graduation in 1967-1969, and unhappiness with practice material offered to Indonesian university lecturers prior to listening to visiting Australian agricultural professors in 1973, led eventually to an interest in alternative modes of assessment of English proficiency. When estimating achievement or readiness, must this be solely based on so-called objective exercises dependent on templates designed mainly to facilitate rapid grading? Was there not an easyto- mark test which allowed the subject to show some sustained creative skill?
