Error analysis is providing growing evidence that the majority of errors made by intermediate and advanced second language learners involves not syntactic errors, but semantic errors of inappropriate word choice (Cornu 1979, Henning 1973). Paradoxically, at the present time, there exists a tremendous lack of vocabulary materials for intermediate and advanced students. Undoubtedly, the emphasis of the audiolingual method on structural mastery before vocabulary expansion contributed to this gap in materials. While an emphasis on syntactic mastery produced a set of comprehensive materials for teaching structure on a beginning and intermediate level, what is now needed, as Twaddell (1972:276) points out, are teaching materials on an intermediate level &dquo;to develop the skills for massive vocabulary expansion.&dquo;
