Isi artikelIt is a fact that except for a minority the language of the school is not the language of the home unless a Malay or Indian child goes to a Malay - or Tamil-medium school respectively. But is the percentage of children who do not speak the school language(s) at home the same for all the races and in all schools? What is the pattern of language use outside school once the children are in the education system? Does the pattern change in the course of their school life? If it does, in what directions does it occur? What languagess can they speak before going to school and what are their dominant languages after approximately ten years when they are ready to leave school? To what extent do they expose themselves to the different languages by their choice of television and radio programmes and in their reading? These are some of the questions the writer sought answers to by means of a questionnaire.
