Isi artikelIn an excellent article on the role of writing in foreign language teaching, C. B. Paulston (1972) makes a plea for the restoration of writing to its rightful place in the language class. She also puts together for the composition teacher the various procedures and techniques of teaching composition, as culled from the available literature, calling attention to the unresolved debate on the merits of free as against controlled or directed composition. (See Bracy 1970, Briere 1966, Erazmus 1960, German 1973,Pincas 1962, among others:} Assuming the relative success and utility of the directed method over the free method, she presents a nearly complete catalag of various types of directed exercises from various sources. While the exercises are in themselves quite good and undoubtedly useful individually, the second language teacher is not told explicitly how and when to use them as he goes through his syllabus. Also, the exercises are already developed compositions and do not teach the student how to start and end one on his own.
