The discourse of a recent position paper by H.G. Widdowson is subjected to analysis by three methods criticised in that very paper. The paper was converted into a miniature data corpus and analysed with the concepts of systemic functional linguistics, corpus linguistics, and critical discourse analysis. These methods may well harbour a potential for more rigorous and disciplined intellectual debate thematising the rhetorical strategies that serve to construct or deconstruct academic ideas and positions.
