Let us suppose that it were possible to take a small cross-section in time of any one of the thousands of English language classes being taught all over the world and to examine it. In Class A we might find the teacher turning to the chalkboard and drawing aB diagram; in Class B another teacher might be telling his class to do some written exercises, and in other classes at that same moment other familiar activities might be starting.
