ESPJ readers acquainted with Ann Johns will not be surprised to learn that her active and productive history at San Diego State University, her home campus, equals that of her scholarly work. A self-described 'troublemaker', Johns has initiated or been a prime mover in establishing a number of SDSU programs over the past two decades. These have included the American Language Institute, the Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies, the ESL-Applied Specialization for Linguistics MA students, and the Integrated Curriculum, a program which links discipline-specific courses with writing instruction, In all of these endeavors, she has brought her ESP perspective to bear in ways that have affected and enhanced learning for large numbers of students. In the following interview by Deborah Poole, a colleague from San Diego State University, Johns discusses these programs and how each relates to her work in ESP. She also reflects on her early interest in ESP, on how ESP has evolved over the past several decades and on her recently published book, Text, Role and Context: Developing Academic Literacies Gohns, 1997).
