Isi artikelThis article describes the results of using field-specific written materials in a language laboratory setting to teach oral skills in a support course for international teaching assistants for the purpose of promoting automaticity in oral production and raising the intelligibility of students through the improvement of fluency and pronunciation of both segmental and suprasegmental features of English. Materials consisted of taped texts from lab manuals and textbooks used in the courses the IT As would be expected to teach. Materials were recorded using "intonation units" (Chafe & Danielewicz 1987) followed by silence so that they could be repeated. Class procedures, student reaction, and results are reported and evaluated.
