Isi artikelAn important feature of instructors' discourse in college laboratory sessions is the use of directives in helping students to accomplish their work. The use of directives by a non-native English speaking demonstrator in a university electrical engineering laboratory is analysed to isolate directive forms and functions and to determine whether the forms used are target- or non-target-like. Findings include the fact that although the demonstrator used several directive forms and functions, many of them appropriately, he placed heavy reliance on one form (you + verb). Also, most instances of his non-native-like forms would probably have been expressed by native speakers as imperatives. Discussion focuses on the use of pronouns in directive forms. Applications include the development of materials used in International Teaching Assistant (ITA) preparation.
