Isi artikel
In this paper, we put forward a number of reasons why postgraduate students need to be able to present bibliographic information in a form that satisfies academic conventions. We then enumerate potential sources of guidance for the student, and global principles of bibliographic presentation. The main part of the paper deals with the provision of explicit tuition in the conventions of the bibliography at the Department of Applied Linguistics, University of Edinburgh and describes a study to assess, by means of performance-sampling and questionnaire, the nature of L1 and L2 students' difficulties, and the extent to which these are catered for by the instruction. The results of this study suggest that the construction of a correctly referenced bibliography is a much more complex operation than was previously assumed and that instruction does help. It also confirms that studies of pre-instruction and post-instruction performance are necessary, as well as revealing.
