Isi artikelStudies of science popularizations have largely focused on syntax and vocabulary to the exclusion of their patterns of discourse organization. An attempt is made in this study to characterize the discourse structure of one type of science popularization - the Journalistic Reported Version (JRV) of research articles in science magazines and newspapers. Fifteen such versions were examined using an expanded version of Swales' (1981) approach to the analysis of genres. The results obtained indicate that the JRV has an identifiable schema by which the information it contains is structured, that a typical JRV text may have as many as nine schematic structures or "moves." The schematic structure is shown to be constrained by pragmatic conditions in the production of popular science texts such as audience, purpose, and medium of discourse.
