Isi artikel
The basis for this discussion of conventional metaphor in ESP contexts is the theory of "conventional metaphor" (e.g., Lakoff, 1987; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Lakoff & Turner, 1989). This basis is elaborated by an examination of the relative scopes of the terms metaphor and idiom and a review of the "lexical bar" theory (Corson, 1985). Chief among the possibilities discussed are: (1) Metaphor has considerable potential to introduce into specialist texts lexis which is not norma11y thought of as pertaining to the field in question, (2) an understanding of the metaphorical derivation of any lexis which is used metaphorically is an important component of both lexical and discourse meaning, and (3) vocabulary teaching in ESP should take more account of the fundamental role of metaphor in language and cognition. A number of examples of possible ways forward in teaching methodology are presented. A plea is made for field-by-field study of the role of metaphor in ESP texts.
