Isi artikel
Prison is considered an unconventional setting for education. As of yet there is no body of literature that specifically addresses the problems that ESL instructors face in a correctional institution. It is important to explore these problems and develop practical solutions in order to create an effective learning environment. This paper focuses on the problematic aspects of curriculum development and implementation in the unconventional setting of prison. A discussion of the specific administrative, socio-affective, and methodological difficulties that the instructor/developer encounters in this setting will also include specific suggestions regarding how to overcome these obstacles. The following topics will be discussed: developing coordination between the objectives of the prison administration and the educator, dealing with restrictions on realia and other educational tools, motivating students to not only attend class but to develop a positive attitude toward education in general, and selecting topics applicable to the wants and needs of the individual student. The practical considerations presented herein will be useful to adult educators regardless of the setting.
