Isi artikelESP/EST programmes which focus on needs established through register analysis do not always prove sufficient to promote effective learning. Macro- and micro-level TL needs originating from the course recipients' psychosociolinguistic reality and from inter- and intralinguistic contrasts and complexities remain mostly unattended to. Moreover, the priority generally accorded to the fostering of reading skills in ESP programmes may not always coincide with the students' expectations. More effective syllabuses could be produced if teaching theories, practice and materials also allowed for needs ascertained through contrastive analysis and contributions from in-situation TL users. Through a questionnaire, administered as a "structured interview," Italian in-field EST users have pointed out their linguistic problems at macro- and micro-ability levels and offered information on other important issues. Writing and listening were confirmed as the most troublesome skills to master at both levels. Speaking was judged to be fairly accessible, while reading was identified as the easiest ability to master even without formal training. The major problem sources identified were the modals, verb sequencing, connectives, articles, and other EST markers. The data obtained and the comments made by the interviewed throw light on linguistic structures, skills, and strategies which should receive more attention in a programme for EST learner-users.
