Isi artikelThe processes of forming community through discourse in university classrooms are not well described at present. Therefore, the long-term purpose of this work is to provide descriptions of such processes, and descriptions of significant constraints on such processes, that is, significant to the teaching of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). This paper presents preliminary results. It describes the process of questioning in one discourse commu-nity and notes the constraints on the process presupposed by the members of that community. The results of observations presented point to complex presuppositions about questioning shared by members of one community. Additionally, from observations of only one community and insights gained from these observations, it has been possible to generalize activities for the EAP classroom. These activities simulate general processes of instruction and questioning in academic communities (to the point that these processes are presently perceived).
