Isi artikelA study of 49 biomedical papers read at five sessions of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, April 1979, reveals that slides playa broader role in biomedical speeches thaI1 nonlinguistic visual devices do in biomedical journal articles. In addition to the expected diagrams, charts, graphs, and tables, slides routinely contain information presented in ordinary language and photographs of laboratory animals and experimental procedures. Such slides act to reinforce important material and to provide visual interest during the speech. Most speakers integrate slides into text, calling attention to their content. Others, however. shift to the reader the burden of extracting information from them.
