This paper discusses the tree-based, grid-based, and mixed (trees and grids) accounts of prosody within the model of generative phonology. It is argued that a version of markedness theory should be included in metrical phonology; it is proposed that Categorical Grammar be adopted as the formal basis of prosodic theory and its associated markedness rules; and it is claimed that the notion of eurhythmy - i.e. an independent system for assigning values to rhythmic structures - can be dispensed with, given a suitable evaluation metric for prosodic systems.
