Isi artikel
The scientific uses of transcription are critically reviewed. It is conceptualized herein as a genre of language use. Emphasis is thereby placed on the psychology of the transcriber as a language user. What can be and what is actually transcribed are codetermined by both characteristics of the spoken discourse and the purposes and capabilities of transcribers. Rules and methods of transcription are not generalizable beyond a very basic set of commonalities, but are for the most part specific to research design. Archival and contemporary transcriptional systems and the consequences of their use are discussed. Criteria for appropriate selection of transcription methods are given.
