Isi artikelThe use of real-time measurements in research on spoken discourse entails a number of chronic problems: (1) choice of instrumental or perceptual assessment of duration or some combination of both; (2) use of a cut-off point for minimal duration of pauses or offtime; (3) choice of equipment for measurement. A new measurement system (Listener, Craig, 1991) developed at Georgetown University is introduced and compared to four other systems on two corpora of spoken discourse. Criteria for optimizing measurement are discussed.
