Transitions, whether from work to retirement or from home to the early grades in school, are inherently stressful. Whether viewed by participants as indicators of success or of failure, major changes in the daily context of events bring increased tension. Being uprooted from established channels if activity causes the breakdown of habitual patterns of action and forces the conscious development of new modes of behaviour that fit the novel set of circumstances.
