This special issue grew out of a symposium at the 1998 society for research on adolescence meetings in san diego titled "psychosocial aspects of the transition to university : recent longitudinal and experimental research." Several of the articles included here (adams, ryan and keating, cote an dlevine, wintre and yaffe) were presented there inprelimianry versions and with the thoughful and energizing commentary of our discussant, sanford dirnbusch, an enjoyable interchange ensued. Members of the audience, notbaly michael berzonsky, had data and perpectives on these issues ot contribute and gerald adams, the incoming editor of the journal if adolescent research,had the good sense to sugegst putting this work together in a somewhat larger context within this special issue framework.
