Isi artikel
There are three forms of computer medlatea communication (CMC): asynchronous CMC (including e-mail, electronic discussion lists and bulletin boards), synchronous CMC (real time communication with no delay, such as web casts), and delayed synchronous CMC (real time communication but delayed, because we have to hit the enter key in order to communicate, such as chat or MOOs). This paper reviews asynchronous computer mediated communication because it is the most realistic form of CMC with respect to the poor internet connectivity in Indonesia. Some guidelines for teachers in the use of asynchronous computer mediated communication are also proposed. Those guidelines are (1) consider carefully your goals, (2) think integration, (3) don underestimate the complexity, (4) provide necexsary support and (5) involve students in decision. After the discussion of some general guidelines for the teachers, the three forms of asynchronous CMC (e-mail, electronic discussion lists and bulletin board) and their possible applications for teaching English as aforeign language in Indonesia are then discussed and presented.
