Isi artikelSubjects judged whether a letter was repeated in a six - letter word or non word (i.e. a scrambled collection of letters). Words typically are judged faster than non words in this task (Krueger, 1989). In the present case, prior knowledge of repetition location was provided in some blocks of trials (pure blocks) by keeping the repetition location constant. In other blocks (mixed blocks), the repetition location varied randomly. The speed advantage for words was significantly reduced, but not eliminated, by prior knowledge of repetition location. The word advantage was especially evident on pure blocks when two letters intervened between the two repeated letters and thus attention was spread over most of the word or non word (see Greenberg & Krueger, 1980).
