Isi artikelCriticism is an essential ingredient of scientific progress. Good criticism not only identifies deficiencies of past research, it also directs future inquiry toward progressive adjustments that can strengthen empirical foundations and deepen theoretical understanding. Glenn Firebaugh has been a good critic of capital dependency theory. His 1992 article first brought to light the routine misinterpretation of "denominator effects" in studies of foreign capital penetration. As a result, Firebaugh argued that dependency researchers had misconstrued foreign investment as harmful when in fact it was merely "not as good" as domestic investment.
