Isi artikelBasically, good literature has two basic qualities. First, literature says something worth saying. Literature embodies thoughts and feelings concerning life's most important issues. Second, literature is something well-said, which implies that there must be some aesthetic beauty, such as careful planning in the arrangement of ideas, imaginative inventions and clear and vivid language. So, the purpose of literary criticism is, basically, to evaluate what has been said (theme), how it has been said (beauty and approach) and whether it is worth saying or not (its importance in terms of human life). Inevitably, students should make themselves familiar with basic terms of criticism, such as theme, approach, form, structure and style. In literary discussion "criticism" is not mere fault finding. Literary criticism is, in fact, making analyses and judgments of works of literature which might include negative criticism (their weaknesses) as well as the better qualities (their strengths). But being simplified, this paper limits the discussion on three items: theme, approach and form.
