Isi artikel
For some, the Bible and the Christian tradition appear to have a timeless quality and a certainty that is lacking in scientific research where theories seem to fluctuate according to the vagaries of fashion. What if new learning were to lead into an intellectual cul-de-sac rather than towards a genuine advance in understanding? Such caution seems to be at work in Some Issues in Human Sexuality. Bishop Richard Harries, Chairman of the Working Group, explains in his Foreword that the document 'works within the parameters' of the 1991 House of Bishops Report, Issues in Human Sexuality2 and is not intended to alter the position taken there. Despite this limitation the authors have made an ambitious attempt to review some of the relevant theological literature on sexuality and gender that has appeared in the intervening years. They also acknowledge a shift that has taken place in society from a concern with the special needs of lesbian and gay people to the broader spectrum of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered3 (LGBT) people, by including chapters on bisexuality and transsexualism. This article primarily focuses on the discussion of 'Transsexualism' (Chapter 7), but with some initial reactions to the report as a whole, and specific comments on 'Homosexuality and biblical teaching' (Chapter 4) and 'Gender identity, sexual identity and theology' (Chapter 5).
