The University Sermon printed below was delivered at Great St Mary's Church, Cambridge, on 7 November 2004 at a special service to mark the 500th anniversary of Lady Margaret Beaufort's endowment of a Preachership in the University of Cambridge. The early holders of the Lady Margaret's Preachership were distinguished graduates who preached at least six sermons a year in London and in a number of parishes in eastern England. In 1679 Charles II dispensed with that requirement 'on the ground of the inadequacy of the remuneration' and decreed that an annual sermon in Latin should he preached in Cambridge. Since 1858 the Lady Margaret's Preacher has 'preached before the University' at the annual commemoration of benefactors.
