Isi artikel
In classical linear optics it is assumed that the induced dielectric polarization of a medium is linearly related to the applied electric field. With the high electric fields involved in laser beams, the non-linear response leads to an exchange of energy between electromagnetic waves at different frequencies. One of the effects produced by a non-linear medium is the fact that the non-linear polarization term is proportional to the square of the electric field. This effect is called Second Harmonic Generation (SHG), in which a laser beam at frequency w is partially converted, in the non-linear material, to a coherent beam at frequency 2w. This technique is currently being used to generate new coherent wave at different frequency from that of the incoming wave.
