When a temperature difference exists between a plate and a stationary fluid, the fluid adjacent to the plate will move upward if the plate temperature is higher than that of the fluid, and downward if the plate temperature is lower. Density gra dients are set up in the fluid, resulting in buoyancy forces and free convective currents. The rate of heat transfer depends mainly on the fluid movement, but the orientation of the plate affects this movement. A horizontal plate restricts the fluid movement and thus reduces the rate of heat transfer, while a vertical one enhances the rate.
