The convergence of mobile communications, computing and the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) gives rise to the Wireless ATM networks. While the ATM helps bring multimedia to the desktop, the Wireless ATM provides similar seivices to mobile computers and devices, and contributes seamless integration services info the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN). In addition, the wireless ATM networks support fast hendover, higher bandwidth, and mobile quality services. The need for seamless integration services into the B-ISDN/ATM networks, the presence of a quantitatively equivalent class of quality of service specification, the limitations associated with the existing mobile phone and wireless LAN systems, and the need to provide mobile multimedia services, mostly explain the desire for the Wireless ATM.
