Despite of its advantages, the relational data base model has two main weaknesses, namely it could not be used to accommodate data that have repeated fields and it would not be efficient for storing the variable field (attribute). This research aims to develop some techniques to modify the relational database model including its RDBMS (Relational Data Base Management System), in such a way that the relational model still can be used to store the repeated fields and at the same time could save the space. The three main activities of this research are (1) proposing new structure of relational data model, (2) developing its suitable Relational Algebra, and (3) testing the proposed structure by developing computer programs to check whether its suitable Relational Algebra could be easily implemented. This research also measures the space efficiency of the proposed structure compared to the ordinary relational model structure. The data used for developing and testing the program were converted from ISO 2709 format data taken from Sanata Dharma University library. The first result of this reseach is that the proposed structure solves the problem of repeated fields and/or variable field. The second result is that the fundamental operations of Relational Algebra can be found and developed through its RDBMS. The research also shows that the proposed structure has no problem with indexing and in fact increases the space efficiency.
