The article looks at what are variously termed 'special' or 'specialized' foreign language schools in the Soviet Union and gives a brief account of some of the similarities and differences that exist between these schools and the ordinary general education schools. It also looks at certain developments that are taking place in the organization of English language teaching in schools in the Russian Federation at the present time.
