Teachers and materials writers are looking for a better alternative to the stock comprehension question. This article considers why something better than the question laid down in advance, by the textbook or teacher, is required, and what sort of improved technique is desirable: the learners must ask the questions, and look for the answers, with the help of each other and of the teacher.
