Counseling is aterm much used an abused in English language teaching today. This article attempts to clarify what is meant by counseling in psychiatric terms, and suggests that fundamental elements in the training of counsellors could well be paralleled in the training of language techers. It goes on to examine what is meant by respect, emphaty, concreteness, and genuineness in counselling terms and hints at ahere these factors could be introduced into teacher training to result in constructive teacher development.
