Isi artikel
Coursebooks teaching speech functions have to indicate contexts of use. Such contexts render inappropriate some attitudinal, stress, and intonation options, and enforce others. It follows that one objective of these coursebooks must be that learners produce attitudinally appropriate utterences. Appropriate stress and intonation patterns must be used when doing this, and so one objective has to be to provide practice in recognizing and manipulating variations related to attitude. The example given suggest ways in which class teachers may work towards this objective.
