The transactional dialogue such as may be heard in everyday buying and selling situations is potentially of great practical value in language teaching. On the evidence of a corpus of actual dialogues, these axchanges are typically short, gramatically and semantically simple, and largely predictable in structure. In contrast, schoolbook dialogues are very often highly deviant in all these respects, so that the transactional dialogues usually presented in school invariably have very little transfer value to genuine real-life situations.
