One of the most common forms of written communication is the letter. and this article documents an exchange of letters between the author and his students on short, residential summer courses, and shows how correspondences which were initially superficial gradually deepened. The spin-off from this work for the teacher was a much clearer knowledge of each group member as an individual, and this in turn considerably affected the way he prepared his classes and what language activities he decided to do with the group.
