This article is concerned with the nature and role of language teaching research, and teachers' perceptions of its relevance. A distinction is drawn between the classical 'top-down' research paradigm and the initiation of research by teachers themselves. These questions are then discussed in relation to a questionnaire given to practising English language teachers, and suggestions are made for further investigation into the issues raised.
