Isi artikelThe objectivity of this article is to explain why individual development of one's vocational skills has become so important in japanese society, and to clarify how individuals try to enhance their ability to work. During the high - growth period that spanned from the end of 1950 s to the early 1990 s, japanese society placed great value on employment stability. It is widely known that in times of economic recession, the speed of employment adjustment in japan was much slower than in the united states, and either the same or slower than in eauropean countries. The collapse of the "bubble economy" and the prolonged deep recession that followed, however, forced even japanese companies which once cherished employment security to make significant cutbacks in their workforce. The growing awareness of th ened for employees to develop their own vocational skills is somehow related to concern over employment stability.
